Games n’ Music tutorial for the Nintendo DS

I. Setup DSOrganize:

1. Create local/temporary directories, for example:

Desktop\Gamesnmusic
Desktop\Gamesnmusic\Card – This will be the root of the card.
Desktop\Gamesnmusic\Card\Music – Place your mp3s here.
Desktop\Gamesnmusic\Card\Notes – Place your text files here.
Desktop\Gamesnmusic\Card\Roms – Place your roms here.

2. Download DSOrganize (DSOrganize_x_x.zip) to the Gamesnmusic directory:
http://www.dragonminded.com/?loc=ndsdev/DSOrganize

3. Open the zip file and extract the file DSOrganize-gnm.nds to:
Gamesnmusic\Card\DSOrganize-gnm.nds

Rename the file to Bootme.nds, so:
Gamesnmusic\Card\Bootme.nds

This will allow DSOrganize to boot in place of the Datel menu.

4. Extract the DSOrganize directory as well:
Gamesnmusic\Card\DSOrganize

5. Highlight both of the DSOrganize files (Edit/Select All), right click on one of them and select Properties (File/Properties).

6. Check the ‘Hidden’ box and click OK. Choose ‘Apply changes to the selected items only’ and click OK.

This will hide the files from the DS since they are not accessed during normal usage.

==============================

II. Setup DLDI:

DLDI can be thought of as a patch that enables homebrew compatibility with the Games n’ Music.

1. Download the Win32 GUI of the DLDI patcher (Dlditool-win32-gui.zip) to the Gamesnmusic directory:
http://dldi.drunkencoders.com/index.php?title=Win32_GUI

2. Open the zip file and extract dlditool32.exe to:
Gamesnmusic\dlditool32.exe

3. Download the Games n’ Music patch (Gmtf.dldi) to the Gamesnmusic directory:
http://dldi.drunkencoders.com/index.php?title=Datel_Games_%27n%27_Music_(microSD)

Do not get Version 2. It is apparently less compatible.

==============================

III. Setup nesDS:

1. Download nesDS (nesDS.nds) to the Gamesnmusic\Card directory:
http://www.cs.utah.edu/~tew/nesDS/

2. At this point I rename the file to Nes.nds, but that’s up to you. Let’s assume we do:
Gamesnmusic\Card\Nes.nds

3. Open dlditool32.exe to patch Nes.nds. It will detect that we are using a Games n’ Music.

4. Click the second ‘…’ button, to the right of Binaries/above Clear.

5. Browse to and select Gamesnmusic\Card\Nes.nds

6. Click Patch at the lower left.

7. It should report that the file was ‘Patched successfully.’ Close the DLDI Patcher application.

8. Copy your NES roms to Gamesnmusic\Card\Roms

==============================

IV. Setup Lameboy:

1. Download Lameboy (lameboy_ds_xx.zip) to the Gamesnmusic directory:
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?download=780

2. Open the zip file and extract lameboy.nds to:
Gamesnmusic\Card\lameboy.nds

3. Again, I rename the file to Gameboy.nds:
Gamesnmusic\Card\Gameboy.nds

4. Open dlditool32.exe to patch Gameboy.nds. It will detect that we are using a Games n’ Music.

5. Click the second ‘…’ button, to the right of Binaries/above Clear.

6. Browse to and select Gamesnmusic\Card\Gameboy.nds

7. Click Patch at the lower left.

8. It should report that the file was ‘Patched successfully.’ Close the DLDI Patcher application.

9. Copy your Gameboy roms to Gamesnmusic\Card\Roms

==============================

IV. Setup SNEmulDS:

1. Download SNEmulDS (SNEmulDSvxx.zip) to the Gamesnmusic directory:
http://www.snemul.com/ds/

2. Open the zip file and extract 000SNEmulDS.nds and snemul.cfg to:
Gamesnmusic\Card00SNEmulDS.nds
Gamesnmusic\Card\snemul.cfg

3. I rename both of these:
Gamesnmusic\Card\Snes.nds
Gamesnmusic\Card\Snemul.cfg

We now need to edit Snemul.cfg to change the rom path from \Snes to \Roms.

Unfortunately it was saved as a Unix file and will not open properly in notepad. We can use Edit.com instead.

4. Click on the Windows Start button and select Run.

5. Paste the following line and adjust the path as necessary.

Edit “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\Gamenmusic\Card\Snemul.cfg”

6. Click OK once you have set it to the proper directory.

7. In the DOS window, change the fourth line:
ROMPath = /SNES

To:

ROMPath = /ROMS

8. Click File (Alt+F) and then Save (S).

9. You can now close the Edit.com DOS window.

The config (cfg) file is required, but can also be marked as hidden so that it is not shown on the DS.

10. Right click on Snemul.cfg and select Properties.

11. Check the ‘Hidden’ box and click OK.

12. Open dlditool32.exe to patch Snes.nds. It will detect that we are using a Games n’ Music.

13. Click the second ‘…’ button, to the right of Binaries/above Clear.

14. Browse to and select Gamesnmusic\Card\Snes.nds

15. Click Patch at the lower left.

16. It should report that the file was ‘Patched successfully.’ Close the DLDI Patcher application.

17. Copy your Snes roms to Gamesnmusic\Card\Roms

==============================

V. Setup Simple GBA Mode Switcher:

The Simple GBA Mode Switcher  is a small application which boots the cart in the GBA slot.

1. Download Simple GBA Mode Switcher (gbaswitch.nds) to the Gamesnmusic\Card directory:
http://www.cryptosystem.org/archives/2007/01/simple-gba-mode-switcher/

2. Optionally, rename the file to Gba.nds:
Gamesnmusic\Card\Gba.nds

==============================

VI. Setup Colors!:

Colors! is a fun pressure sensitive painting/drawing application.

1. Download Colors! (colors_x_xxx.zip) to the Gamesnmusic directory:
http://www.collectingsmiles.com/colors/

2. Open the zip file and extract Colors.nds:
Gamesnmusic\Card\Colors.nds

3. Create a ‘Colors’ subdirectory to store the Colors! data files:
Gamesnmusic\Card\Colors\

We’ll also set it hidden from view from the DS.

4. Right click on Colors folder and select Properties.

5. Check the ‘Hidden’ box and click OK.

6. Open dlditool32.exe to patch Colors.nds. It will detect that we are using a Games n’ Music.

7. Click the second ‘…’ button, to the right of Binaries/above Clear.

8. Browse to and select Gamesnmusic\Card\Colors.nds

9. Click Patch at the lower left.

10. It should report that the file was ‘Patched successfully.’ Close the DLDI Patcher application.

==============================

VII. Configure DSOrganize:

1. Copy the contents of the ‘Card’ folder to the microSD card.

2. Remove the microSD card from the reader and insert it into the Games n’ Music cartridge. Turn on the DS.

3. DSOrganize should boot.

4. Press down twice on the dpad to select Configuration and press A.

5. Press the right shoulder to select ‘Startup Screen.’ Press the right dpad to change this to ‘Browser’

6. Press the start button until you reach the ‘Browser Settings’ (folder icon).

7. Press the right dpad to change ‘Show Hidden Files’ to ‘No’

8. Press the right shoulder until you reach ‘Default Boot Method’

9. Press the right dpad to change this to ‘Chishm’

You can also (optionally) change the ‘Alternate Boot Method’ to ‘Chishm’

10. Press A to save the changes.

11. Turn the DS off and back on again.

The DS is now fully configured. Use the dpad to navigate the menu and press A to make a selection.

==============================

VIII. Notes

1. Here’s the full directory breakdown:

\Colors (Hidden)
\DSOrganize (Hidden)
\Music
\Notes
\Roms
Bootme.nds (Hidden)
Colors.nds
Gameboy.nds
Gba.nds
Nes.nds
Snemul.cfg  (Hidden)
Snes.nds

2. The microSD card should always be formatted as ‘FAT’ per Datel.

3. You can (likely) purchase a larger microSD card much cheaper online than you can locally.

I bought a 2GB Kingston card from newegg.com for $25 with a USB reader. Locally it would have been 80$.

4. There is plenty of other homebrew to try. Useful resources:
